FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. General

Q: Do I need to bring anything with me?
A: Just a smile, everything is provided. If using the throwing wheel, it is recommended that you bring a change of trousers as these are often splashed with clay during the process.

Q: What is the Sat Nav address?
A: If you use the postcode BA11 1PX, you will be taken to the mini roundabout at the top of Vicarage Street. Enigma Pottery is a few metres down the road on the right-hand side.

Q: Where can I park?
A: There is ample parking in Lidl supermarket just around the corner or in car parks at the bottom end of Vicarage Street.

Q: Do you serve refreshments?
A: Yes, light refreshments are available to purchase. Alcohol is permitted to be brought with you (over 18’s only).

Q: Is there wheelchair access?
A: Although access is available for wheelchair users the pathway is gravelled so some assistance may be required.

Q: Do you have toilet facilities?
A: Yes, toilet facilities are available but not accessible by wheelchairs.

2. Structure of Classes and workshops

2a – REGULAR POTTERY CLASSES – ADULT

Q: How many classes are in a Block?
A: Normally the classes run in 6 week blocks during term times however some terms may be either 5 or 7 weeks depending on when the school holidays fall.

Q: Are there any extra fees?
A: Yes, you will be charged for all fired work based on weight (an average size mug usually costs approximately £2)

Q: How many student are there per session?
A: There are a maximum of 6 students per session.

Q: Do I get to use a throwing wheel?
A: There are 2 wheels available to use. If more than two students want to throw, they will have to take turns.

Q: If I have never done pottery before, what will I be doing?
A: For beginners or those who have not done pottery for a long time we start by making pinch pots, a coil pot and a slab box. These are kept from drying whilst you are shown various decorating techniques after which you will have a wide choice of how to decorate your pieces.

Q: Can I decide what I make or is the class structured?
A: If you have previous experience and want to work on a project, we will guide you through where required. As there are only 6 students, everyone can be working using different methods.

2b – REGULAR POTTERY CLASSES – AFTER-SCHOOL

Q: Do you supply protective clothing?
A: Yes, all sizes of aprons are catered for.

Q: What age can my child start pottery?
A: We believe that children can use clay to model and build as soon as they stop trying to eat it.

Q: Will I have to stay with my child?
A: All children aged 8 and under will need to be supervised by a responsible adult at all times.

Q: Can I bring young siblings along who are not doing pottery?
A: We do not have creche facilities and have found that younger siblings can cause a distraction to the other children in the group so unfortunately we can not allow you to bring them along.

Q: Are the classes project based or are they free play sessions?
A: These classes are not free play sessions. The child can decide what they would like to create. Instruction is given for them to learn the pottery process and we have project ideas if they require inspiration?

A: The after-school clubs are for hand-building only.

Q: Do the children clean the studio when they have finished?
A: All students are asked to take any dirty tools to the sink and clean their tables.

2c – PRIVATE THROWING TUITION

Q: Do you use electric or manual throwing wheels?
A: We use electric wheels controlled by a foot pedal or hand lever.

Q: How many pots will I make?
A: This depends on how quickly you understand and follow the instructions given. For a 1-hour session you will choose 2 of the pots you have made to be fired and glazed; a 2-hour session you will choose 4 pots. No-one has gone away without having enough pots to choose from yet.

Q: Can we take what we have made away on the day?
A: Your creations will need to have two firings which may take up to two weeks to process. You will be contacted when they are ready. Arrangements can be made to have them sent on, prices on application.

Q: What can I achieve in a 1 or 2 hour throwing tuition?
A: You will be learning the skill of throwing a pot on an electric wheel and may produce several pots. You can keep two pots per hour per person which will be fired and glazed to your chosen colour.

2d – GROUP WORKSHOPS AND PARTIES?

Q: How many people do you cater for?
A: We require a minimum of 4 people and a maximum of 12.

Q: What will we be making in a group session/party?
A: You have a choice of making a coil-built pot made into a jug/mug/bowl/vase; or model an animal.

Q: How long do you recommend we book for?
A: Very young children work a lot quicker and have less concentration time so one hour is sufficient for them. Older children would be better having an extra half hour and adults will need two hours.

Q: Can we take what we have made away on the day?
A: Your creations will need to have two firings which may take up to two weeks to process. You will be contacted when they are ready. Arrangements can be made to have them sent on, prices on application.

Q: Can we bring food and drinks with us?
A: For adult sessions, nibbles and drinks (alcoholic over 18’s only) may be brought along to be consumed during the session. For children’s parties it is not recommended to have food or drink in the studio whilst they are working.

2e – POTTERY PAINTING

Q: What can I achieve in a 1 or 2-hour pottery painting session?
A: For the 1-hour session you can select to paint a piece up to the value of £15. For a 2-hour session up to the value of £25.

Q: How much does each piece cost during the drop-in session?
A: The cost ranges from £5 to £50 depending on size.

Q: How long will it take me to paint something in the drop-in session?
A: Depending on the size and complexity of the piece chosen, allow between 30 mins and 2 hours.

Q: Can we take what we have painted away on the day?
A: You will be painting with glazes that need firing which will take a couple of days to process. You will be contacted when they are ready. Arrangements can be made to have them sent on, prices on application.
